  • Data recovery should be a simple process of restoring the data from the most recent backup. This assumes everybody has a reliable backup system in place. You would be surprised of the actual statistics. It is estimated that 50% of all hard drives will fail within 5 years. Only 25% of users have an automated reliable backup system. So, if you do the math 37.5% of end users have a data loss event in their future. The average cost of each data loss is estimated to be around $2,500.

There are 3 levels of data recovery including logical, physical, and clean room in that order. Logical data recovery is done using software utilities that can scan the damaged drive for data. The drive must be at a basic level of functionality for this to work. But what if the drive has physical damage and cannot be accessed with software. This is where physical recover begins. Physical data recovery involves finding a working donor drive that is an exact match to the damaged drive. Parts can be harvested from the donor drive in an attempt to get the damaged hard drive working again. When all else fails its on to the clean room. Clean rooms are dust free environments where the damaged drive can be disassembled to remove the internal disk platters and recover the data. This is the most expensive process of the 3 levels.
